Electric Bike Review

At long last, our Yukon 750 Limited Volt Bikes had arrived! We received a phone call from the YRC terminal outside of Denver, Colorado, on Monday, September 30th alerting us that our packages were available for pick up.  Before leaving, we installed our new Hollywood Sport Rider Bike Rack on the Jeep.  At the customer service counter, we presented our confirmation for the pickup, were directed to wait for someone to help us, and watched the forklift driver pick them up and drop them off next to the Jeep where we were left to unpack them.

Armed with a box cutter, scissors, and a few other tools, we unpacked the bikes from their sturdy cardboard boxes one by one.  First, attaching the handlebars and then mounting the bike to the rack.  Volt Bike includes a set of tools needed for final assembly, but you’ll need tools to get into these heavy-duty boxes and cut away the inner packaging.  All in all, it was smooth sailing, at least for where we had been with Volt Bike during the order process.

On Tuesday, we completed the assembly by attaching the pedals to the bikes.  It was finally time to go for a ride!  We enjoyed a beautiful sunset ride around St Vrain State Park, the campground where we were staying when we got the bikes.   It didn’t take long at all to feel comfortable on the bike.

On Saturday we went for our first big ride on St. Vrain Greenway and had a great ride until I got a flat tire.  My first reaction was to blame Volt Bike.  When Brian’s tire went flat just after mine did, it seemed unlikely that it was an issue with manufacturing.  The local repair shop that replaced tubes for us pointed out the “goat heads” that had punctured the tubes.  It was a valuable lesson learned for me!  While Kenda produces puncture-resistant tires, the ones on these bikes are not them.

It’s only been a couple of weeks since we picked them up, but we have had them out a few more times now to ride around campgrounds and into town for lunch.  We have a bigger ride planned for this coming weekend.

In my limited experience, with riding e-bikes, these bikes ride very well on gravel or dirt paths and concrete roads.  The turning-radius is excellent with the bike handling sharp turns very well.  I love that you can use a little throttle to get the bike going after being stopped.  And unlike another e-bike we tried a while back, the throttle is less aggressive and easier to control.  With nine levels of pedal assist, I’ve only experimented with the first four or five.  I’m not out to win any races, and I still want to get some exercise on the bike.

We’ve purchased a few things to make the bikes work better for us.  Since neither of us has a sport-sized butt to sit on, we both wanted different seats.  We ordered Brian this seat and a noseless seat for me.  And, we have added handlebar stem extenders to position the handlebars a little higher, producing a more comfortable ride for both of us.  Since we didn’t receive the pannier bag we ordered from Volt, we purchased a pannier bag from Amazon.  We also ordered bike bells to safely alert others around us that we are preparing to pass.  Don’t be worried that our new bikes are going to be leaving our dog, Skipper, home alone too much.  We have a pet trailer for him to bike with us!

We are sure to spend a lot more time riding these bikes than our traditional bikes partly because we aren’t limited to personal strength in getting there and back.  And honestly, we will likely rider more because it’s fun!  With only a couple of modifications for ourselves, it’s super comfortable!  You might prepare yourself for the order process with Volt Bike by reading about our experience here

If you are going to purchase a Volt Bike during the checkout process, when prompted for “How did you hear about us?” please select “Volt Bike Ambassador” and in the box that says “Enter name of the person who referred you to us” please fill in the name “Anne Klumpp.”
