Does Everything Happen for a Reason?

Have you ever heard, “Everything happens for a reason.”  I believe it’s true.  Everything does happen for a reason.  In the heat of the moment, it may be impossible to know what that reason is, but eventually months or maybe even years later, if you think about it, the answer will be there.  I’ve believed this for a long time.

A year ago, just before Thanksgiving, when I got a phone call from my employer of fifteen years, announcing a change in my job, I doubted the “everything happens for a reason” thing.  I thought I had been clear with them for two years that this job change was a deal-breaker for me.  I was extremely upset in the days following that announcement.

Today, on this anniversary of change, I reflect on this announcement as a gift from them to me.  I’m certain that I would have continued to work miserably in my position for this past year.  The change opened my mind for other changes, including living fulltime in our RV.  In these months, I’ve learned more about who I am, all while traveling through nine states, visiting five national parks, several national monuments & forests, and a national lakeshore, and walking through countless state, county, and city parks.

We’ve had challenges in learning the systems of our motorhome.  Expensive repairs and costly maintenance have us asking ourselves if we can or should sustain the lifestyle longterm.  These are the times currently when I am unsure of the notion that “everything happens for a reason.”  But as previous life events become clear to me, I know that if I trust the process, trust myself through the process, and remain open to change for the future, I will understand what the reason was someday.
